Storing Major Appliances
Storing major appliances like a refrigerator, dishwasher or stove can seem like a daunting task given how much they cost and their overall size, but with the right prep work, they can be stored safely for a long period of time.
Choose a Climate Controlled Unit
Changes in temperature and humidity can result in condensation, which could cause damage to your appliances. Climate-controlled storage units regulate temperature and humidity levels to ensure that they stay within a safe range year-round.
Remove All Water
Be sure to remove any water from hoses or internal components such as holding tanks, filters and defrost pans prior to cleaning. Allow enough time for these components to dry completely. Any residual moisture can lead to mold and mildew.
Thoroughly Clean All Appliances
Make sure to clean the inside and outside of your appliances thoroughly. Food spills and crumbs can attract bugs and other pests, while unclean surfaces leave your appliances vulnerable to mold and mildew growth.
Secure Doors with Tape During Transit
Once your appliances are clean and completely dry, use strong tape to secure doors for safe transport. This keeps you and your movers safe while moving your items. Plus, it avoids damage to your other items caused by doors swinging open in transit.
Leave Doors Open In Storage
Once your appliances are placed in the unit, the tape should be removed and doors should be left slightly open to prevent any mildew growth. Allowing air to circulate helps avoid moisture and prevent mold.
Wrap and Reinforce Fragile Items
Appliances that contain glass or fragile finishes should be wrapped with bubble wrap and covered with moving blankets to avoid damage. These areas should also be marked as fragile so they can be handled with care during the moving process and to avoid contact with heavier items once they are placed in storage.
Transport Appliances Upright
Storing items inside appliances is not recommended, as they can easily be damaged during transport. Appliances should always be transported upright to avoid damage to the internal components.
Cover Appliances with a Sheet or Tarp
Once your appliances are stored in the unit, cover them with a sheet or tarp to avoid any dust exposure. Make sure air can circulate around the appliance freely.
